Painted rice-cake

Tao Te Ching Chapter 53-5
Painted rice-cake / Empty granary
The granary is totally

empty. (Ch.53)

Don't judge anyone

even if some people

are starving.

A Zen master (香厳智

[Kyogen Chikan /

Hsing-yen Chih-hsien / Xiangyan Zhixian]) said:

"A painted rice-cake does not satisfy hunger."

On the other hand, Master Dogen concludes the chapter of Gabyo 画

/ a painted rice-cake in Shobogenzo 正法眼蔵, saying:

"If it is not a painted rice-cake, it must not be a remedy to satisfy

hunger."

Hunger and a painted rice-cake are part of your hologram.

They exist to stimulate you to emit more fundamental energy (=Tao,

=Love).

Just thank the empty granary.

Go Nagai, the author of «Devilman», was born in 1945, in Wajima (in Ishikawa prefecture as were Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki and Kitaro Nishida). Nagai intentionally mixed the elements of carnal desire with his Manga creation. With or without knowing it, he was following the same steps as Lady Murasaki Shikibu («The Tale of Genji / Genji monogatari») and Ihara Saikaku («The life of an Amorous Woman / Koshoku Ichidai Onna», «The life of an Amorous man / Koshoku Ichidai Otoko»). Please don't blame Japanese Manga for being too explicit. It hurts the feelings of those who love Japan's traditional literature. Thank you for your open-mindedness in advance.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 53-6
Too much money
Some wear a beautiful dress with a

sharp sword, tired of

eating and drinking,

having too much

money. (Ch.53)

♦  ♦  ♦

When you see

excessive wealth, do

you get jealous?

Please don't judge anyone because they are rich.

They are being "rich" for you.

Zen Master Dogen clearly says:

"The entire world is just an ume flower. Since the entire world is an

ume flower, the entire world is Buddha's hologram."

尽界梅華なるがゆゑに尽界は瞿曇の眼睛なり。

(Baika 梅華, «Shobogenzo»)

The world of luxury, gourmandism, and capitalism is your hologram

and a catalyst to stimulate you.

Don't doubt this.

The master also says:

"Grasp intuitively that an ume flower is a hologram. Don't look for

another answer."

直に梅華眼睛を開明なるべし、さらにもとむることやみね。

(Baika 梅華, «Shobogenzo»)

Thief’s luxury
This is called a thief's

luxury. (Ch.53)

♦  ♦  ♦

Lao Tzu teaches us

that beautiful clothes,

gourmet dinners, and

excessive money are

"a thief's luxury".

So are a Samue 作務

Japanese working kimono, a Kaiseki 懐石 zen dinner, and an

Ofuse お布施 donation.

Don't be fooled by either material wealth nor oriental exoticism.

Do not judge them, either.

"A thief's luxury" is part of your hologram, which is a manifestation of

Tao.

Therefore, every time we see a wealthy monk or a Zen snob, we

should say:

"Thank you for stimulating me to emit more Love."

Tao Te Ching Chapter 53-8
Hologram is not Tao
A thief's luxury is not

Tao. (Ch.53)

♦  ♦  ♦

"A thief's luxury"

represents your

hologram.

So, the hologram is not

Tao.

Be careful.

Your hologram is a manifestation of Tao, but not Tao itself.

What is a hologram, really?

Master Dogen explains it very well in his Shobogenzo:

"The entire world is a mind and land. The entire world is flowers and

feelings. Since the entire world is flowers and feelings, the entire

world is an ume flower. Since the entire world is an ume flower, the

entire world is Buddha's hologram."

尽界は心地なり、尽界は華情なり、尽界華情なるゆゑに、尽界は梅

華なり。尽界梅華なるがゆゑに、尽界は瞿曇の眼睛なり。

(Baika 梅華, «Shobogenzo»)

Did you get it?

The world = mind + material beings = visual images + feelings = an

ume flower = a hologram
