26. Root

[Chapter 26 / English Translation] - click the line to watch the related video.
Something heavy is the root of something light.

Something still is the root of something restless.

If you are light, you lose the root.

If you are restless, you lose the root.

<Note> Osamu Kanaya, a Japanese specialist on ancient Chinese literature, suggests that there are some sentences between the second one and the third. He thinks that they are notes added by later hands. So, they are omitted here.

Rapid Decoded

<POINT> Don't move until you are forced to.

Don't move. You (=something heavy, =Tao) are the one who projects your hologram (=the world).

Be quiet. You (=something still, =Tao) had better not act directly. Then, Dark Depth will transform your hologram.

If you act lightly, you are no longer one with Tao (=you have forgotten the fact that true You are Tao) and stuck in your hologram (=the world).

If you run around or try to convince others, you are no longer one with Tao. As Chuang Tzu says, don't move until you are forced to.

☞"Lao Tzu's «Tao Te Ching» 老子「道徳経」 doesn't have much detailed information!" "Zen Master Dogen's «Shobogenzo» 道元禅師「正法眼蔵」 is too abstract to apply the teachings in life!" If you are looking for something in the midway between the two highly recommended books, «Chuang Tzu 荘子» is worth checking. Like «Tao Te Ching», the book is not so genuine as «Shobogenzo» in terms of the authenticity of the original. Stories and comments were not written solely by Chuang Tzu although he is supposed to have been a real person rather than an imaginary one or a name for the collective wisdom. Some recommend only «The Inner Chapters 内篇» of «Chuang Tzu», but you can find quite a few interesting reading materials in the other chapters as well. For example, you can find in «The Outer Chapters 外篇» the passage quoted in Tao by Matsumoto video blog 42-8 Chuang Tzu's teachings.

Masanobu Fukuoka 福岡正信, a revolutionary botanist, is sometimes called "a modern-day Lao Tzu". For his "do nothing / no intervention" agriculture, he may deserve it. Then, who can be a modern-day Chuang Tzu? If he is a hard worker, well, he is out of question. He has to be lazy. If he doesn't work but has plenty of social engagements, no, he won't deserve the name. It doesn't matter if he is rich or not but he must not be attached to material things. If you want to be a modern-say Chuang Tzu, here are some books for guidance. Both «The Joy of Not Working» and «How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free» were written by Ernie J. Zelinski. If you find Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu a little too "conceptual", check them.
